If I convert a bmp to jpg, is there any way of retaining the mask color?

Use PNGs. With regards to performance, everything is uncompressed on the graphics card so you're only saving HDD space.

Cheers Rob, Since posting I realised my mask colour had changed in conversion therefore frame was drawing more pixels. I have now copied the image onto a jpg with a transparency layer and it now renders at exactly the same speed.

That was a new one on me too!?? i like my PNGs tho, no image loss ;)
