Hi, i need a tool which is free which can make models and use texture functions like in 3ds max like bump mapping and masking, can anyone help please?

But seriously, have you tried one of the free versions of Truespace? ... not sure how close you'll get to the brilliance of 3dmax for free though :(

Or you could try Blender, not easy to use, but I've seen some amzing stuff done with Blender

For tools, its always good to check the toolbox area of this site.

GameSpace is by far the best for blitz IMO. The lite version is limited but good. I have the full version and enjoy it.
