I could do with someone producing an overview of file formats with reference to animation in particular. Most 3d progs have the 3ds file format, but can this hold skeletal info or just frame by frame animations?. I know b3d is ok but few top 3d progs have it,exept 3ds Max which is outside my budget.

Why do you need to know this? If it's for writing your own loader, then that link will help. If you need to know what file format to use with Blitz, then you already know what file format you need. And b3d file format can be exported from a whole lot of tools besides just 3D Studio Max. Not to mention you can use Ultimate Unwrap to convert .x files with skeletal animation into b3d file format, and just about all 3D animation tools can export to DirectX file format.

I have Silo, Cinema 4d v6, and Carrara 4. Two of them have 3ds format only. Cinema 4d has x format but not with animation info. However I have now got a plugin for Cinema 4d which does export the required type of animation info. Silo of course does not do animation. I could have bought more wisely had I had the right info.
