W/A/S/D - especially if you're combining mouse control. But yeah, if you're using keys they need to be redefineable.

no mouse control, but there will be full joypad support for ps3 and 360 controllers

If there is no mouse control, please use the arrow keys. Some folks hate WASD. Key bindings are a must though, so everybody can adjust it to their particular preferences.

What are other combinations people would recommend? Depends on what type of game really. W/A/S/D+ mouse is something more for FPS 3D games. Many computers in the 80/90's didn't use a mouse for games. You only had a choice of Keyboard or/with one buttoned Joystick. One keyboard combination used to be Q=Up/A=Down/O=Left/P=Right/Bottom Row or Space=Fire. But keyboard controls need to be user definable.

I could never get on with WASD - controlling movement with my left hand - which may go some way to explaining why I also never really enjoyed playing any FPS game.

Greatly prefer cursor keys over WASD as well
