@ Pete Carter In the past I used the one from ZoneLabs a lot and I was happy with it. They have a free version, but not experienced with that one http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/free-upgrade-security-suite-zonealarm-firewall.htm Lately I have a Windows 2008 server between my internet and internal network and use the buildin Firewall wich is very good, before that I used SmoothWall, a free easy to install linux based firewall on an old PC with 2 network cards (so the PC was dedicated to a Firewall only) Personally I don't like to run extra software on my game PC so more CPU is available for other stuff. @Nawi Linux is not an answer to everything, please stay ontopic for once and don't change it into a Linux VS Window one again.

No. There isn't a good free anti-virus either. You get what you pay for.

SPF free does a good job for me and it's free.

| ZoneAlarm free version is a solid firewall - ZoneLabs/Checkpoint Software cannot afford for it to be a weak variant of the commercial version. Comodo, as mentioned above, is certainly as good (if not better) than ZoneAlarm free; however, as mentioned, it can be fiddly to use. ZoneAlarm free, is certainly an easy firewall to use and I favour its ease of use over Comodo. Personally, I use the full version of ZoneAlarm and, failing that, would use their free version over some other commercial products - mainly for ease of use. | I bet he goes with ZoneAlarm. |

You can also look at Outpost ... I use their security suite though with a lifetime updates licence ... the firewall is very good but can be complicated for a beginner, though it does have automatic rule creation.

m0n0wall and pfSense are great free firewalls, though both are made to run on a machine of their own and are more useful for companies than your average home user.

I quite liked ashampoo winoptimizer and their free firewall when I used XP. Windows 7 firewall seems fairly easy to use though and works in both directions, which they never used to on older windows versions.
