AVG problem?
Community Forums/General Help/AVG problem?

This may just be a coincidence but since installing a major update to AVG today (one that required a restart), I'm having trouble accessing some websites. They generally load part way and then the connection just seems to stall/hang. I'm even having trouble logging in to my router, so this is possibly a problem that's nothing to do with AVG. Anyhoo, anyone else noticed any weirdness since installing the update? It also seems AVG has seen fit to remove the option to turn it off, so I can't really test without AVG running. :/ |

Yeah, i had problems with AVG. One of the .dll got corrupted and it affects my ability to disable network connections. When i try, it restarts the computer... And the option to disable AVG would be nice too. |

Yeah, I remember you saying in another thread, but that was a few weeks ago, wasn't it? My problem just started today after installing the latest update. Like I say though, it could just be a coincidence. Maybe my ISP is having a bad day... |

Funnily enough, I came across this at my real job today -- some guy had just updated AVG from 8 to 9 this afternoon and was then having problems accessing web and email. (Internet Explorer was failing to load properly too, while AVG thrashed away at the disk.) |

And the option to disable AVG would be nice too On the Overview screen double click on Resident Shield. Near the botton there is a check box for whether this is active. I'm not sure exactly what this does. But sometimes AVG interferes with the installation of new software. Temporarily disabling the resident shield is enough to fix this. It might be worth a try for your auto-restart problem. |

I have AVG on two of my PCs. When I put my USB stick on one PC, AVG swears blind there's a virus on it (with a name full of random characters). The other one reports nothing. Personally I'm starting to think that antivirus software causes more aggravation than just having a virus. |
| ||
Hmm, think I may just try uninstalling AVG and see if that sorts things. :/ |

In #firefox at irc.mozilla.org, HUGE ammounts of problems are caused by the AVG addon. I would uninstall and use SptBot Search and Destroy. |

When I put my USB stick on one PC, AVG swears blind there's a virus on it (with a name full of random characters). The other one reports nothing. Woah weird. Just yesterday I stuck a USB stick into my computer too and it yelled at me sayin there's a virus. I haven't had any other problems though. |

I uninstalled AVG and the problem went away. Then I tried doing a clean install of AVG but the problem returned. However, AVG released another update a couple of days later that seems to have fixed things. AJ00200: What kind of problems and why would I need to run Spybot Search and Destroy? |

big10p, all sorts of problems from bad connections to the built in search box not working. badly-rendered pages... the list goes on. I would recommend Spybot Search and Destroy over every AV program out there (especially AVG). Disabling their safe search plugin might help solve some of your problems (if your using Firefox that is - if not, start). |

I would recommend Spybot Search and Destroy over every AV program out there (especially AVG). Spybot doesn't search for viruses though. Which is probably why you think you never get any. |

Yeah, I use FF. The only AVG plugin I can see is the link scanner thing, which I've disabled. I've never used Spybot Search and Destroy. I thought it was a malware/virus scanner, not a resident AV app like AVG? |
| ||
It includes a resident AV scanner. Make sure to set it into advanced mode. It has saved me a few times from everything from viruses to unwanted programs setting themselves to run at startup. It also has a mini-Registry-Cleaner too (called system internals on the tools list). I recommend advanced and Paranoid mode (It actually isn't as annoying as you'd think). |

Ah, k. Thanks for the info. |

No problem. |
