Hey, I just made a new, cheap website that has some meshes ans games that I have made. Please tell me what you think of the stuff, I have had Blitz Basic for almost 2 months now. *http://sticks.homestead.com/aboot.html* Copy and paste between the stars. -Thanks |
| ||
Po, congratulations for your new Site, but there are two things: first: why don't you simply put the link in here? Is there a Problem with the Referrer? And second, more important: I generally boycott Javascript-only Sites. It was nice to mention that the Site needs Script, but personally I simply hate to turn on Script. Ok, I just tried it and it just remembered me of why Scripts suck: Popup-Ads. I would hardly reccomend to use an other Webspace Provider. Lately a nice Blitzer told me at www.50free.com you can get 50 Megs without Advertisement for free. There's a 500 Megs Traffic Limit, so use small Images on the Mainpage. To your Site Design: Reduce the Amount of Images on the Mainpage, instead put them to a Screenshots Subpage and even there use little Thumbs which can be clicked to (eg:) open the full size Image in a new browser window(<a href="img.jpg" target="_bank"><img src="img_tmb.jpg"></a>). Add more Subpages, some Standard Subpages like: News, Home, Screenshots, Projects, Downloads, Links , Contact etc. Feel free to ask whenever you have a Question - although I am only an average-to-bad Webdesigner. |
| ||
Well, I think that free webspace came with the purchasing of Shaw Cable, you know, the www.shaw.ca stuff, and my mom isn't using it so she said it was ok if I made a website on it....... But I only know acouple lines of HTML that is stuff like: put pictures on and backgrounds and text........ so yeah, you think I should switch to shaw? |
| ||
I don't know exactly what shaw.ca offers, but I assume they have no Ads in your Webspace and maybe they even offer php and mysql that you could learn the sooner or the later, so I'd say: yes, use shaw instead! (the only Problm is when your Mom drops that Provider one day you will lose the Webspace as well) It would also be ok to use some HTML Design Templates ( eg: http://billsdesigns.tripod.com/templates/page1.html ) or to use any HTML-Editor that works in a GUI Mode (no need for HTML Syntax, Click-and-design). |
| ||
My site is almost done, I only used Notepad to do the HTML and I did what you said: There are no pics on the home page, and I have a page devoted to meshes and a page devoted to games and I put seperet links to the pics of the meshes and games. It's not that good but I think I did my best and it's nicely organized and very simple. Just one question: How do you put files on your website so other people can download them? What is the HTML code for that? Never mind, I figured it out. -Thanks |
| ||
you have to upload the files, as ZIP Files or something similar. Then you can link them like any link: <a href="mygame.zip">Download my game</a> EDIT: >>Never mind, I figured it out. << Uh, just saw this :) |
| ||
Oj, yeah, where is your new site now? :) |
| ||
I am having difficulties with my windows 98 web puublisher, I know how to publish one page but I have tried selecting all of my pages but it's not working, and the URL does not seem to work either so..... My site is not up yet |
| ||
windows 98 Web Publisher? Hm sounds like something not so useful :) If you have FTP Access to your Webspace then I hardly reccomend to use a FTP Client program. This will make the Upload as easy as move some Files from one Folder to an other. Maybe try one of these: http://www.ftpx.com/ http://www.vista.ru/2inter.htm http://www.smartftp.com/ |
| ||
. Tell me what you think. |
| ||
works perfectly! Very nice to offer your meshes for download. keep up the good work! btw. take care with your email adress, spam-bots will send you lots of virus-infected attachments when you post your email adress in the web. probably better write: paulleduc at shaw.ca . |
| ||
how do you change the colour of a heading? |
| ||
For gods sake, have your heading after the <body> flag, and it's done like everywhere else<html> <head> <title>Pauls Place</title> </head> <body background="images/paperback.jpg"> <font color="#ff6666"> <h1>GAMES</h1> <p align="left"> <font face="courier" size="5" color="#ff0000"> <b> In this page you will find all of my games and programs I have made using Blitz 3D and Adobe Photoshop. Feel free to download any of them on the downloads page. </p> <P align="left"><a href="index.html">Home</a> <P align="left"><a href="meshpage.html">Meshes</a> <P align="left"><a href="futuregamespage.html">Future Games</a> <P align="left"><a href="downloadpage.html">Downloads</a> <P align="center">Click on a game\program to view an enlarged picture of it and some information on it.</p> <P align="center"><a href="gm2000.html">Guess Master 2000</a> <P align="center"><a href="gam2000.html">Game Master 2000(not downloadable)</a> <P align="center"><a href="cubeintro.html">Rotating Cube Intro(not downloadable)</a> <P align="center"><a href="thematrixtypescene.html">The Matrix Type Scene</a> </b> </font> </body> </html> |
| ||
By the way, Courier is not a true type font, wich is why it shows up as large pixels, I'll recommed that you use another font. Hope you don't mind that I say your games are quite un-interesting. |
| ||
I found them pretty amusing. po just started coding and is only 13 years old. when i was 13 years I didn't even know how a computer looks. |
| ||
There, I changed the font to Impact and changed the background. Now I am going to focus on making games! Thanks for the help jfk. :D |
| ||
po, make shure the background image doesn't have too much contrast to make the text readable. |
| ||
is the background green with yellow stripes? If it is then thats the wrong one. The backgroundI have now is black whith white stripes. Just click refresh a bunch of times on each page. |
| ||
I like: "Not responsible for any computer difficulties" |
| ||
Yes, Paul, the black with white stripes background makes the text pretty unreadable, don't you think so too? Well, it's your site and you're the master of the design. Just let me tell you that I worked as a webdesigner and for a professional it's a nono to use such a combination. If you would use a black with dark grey stripes background, that would look much better. Here's a darker version: (just right-click and save as...) ![]() |
| ||
for your very fist site and your first games/apps everything looks great. I am sure everything will improve and get better as you learn more and get more experience. |
| ||
well I thought that the black is a big upgrade from my first background. Thanks I will try that darker one. I like: "Not responsible for any computer difficulties" At first I had "You better hope that I don't have the skill to give a virus! :)" but then I took it out because it would scare people :) |
| ||
There, now it is a bit darker so you can read it better. |
| ||
Paul: Here is a way that you can display your email address on your web site so that people can click on it like normal, but it will also protect against the SPAM harvesters.<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript"> username="paulleduc" at="@" domainname="shaw.ca" document.write("<A HREF='mailto:"+username+""+at+""+domainname+"'>"+username+""+at+""+domainname+"</a>") </script> |
| ||
hmmmmm..... I dunno.... Java Script? jfk said that script is bad because of pop-ups. Is there no all HTML way to do it? But then again....... My stupid sister and her friend get a .com website, and it uses java script.... And I really want to have a better site then she does.... But hers is so good because of her friends dad is doing all the work >:( http://www.andystick.com It's just a bunch of depresing cartoons. |
| ||
jfk said that script is bad because of pop-ups. Yup... but that's why you have pop-up killers, right? Most sites use java, so disabling it from the browser just makes YOU suffer... it's easier and better to have java ON, but use pop-up killers IMO. BTW, your sites BG-pattern is really distracting... |
| ||
BTW, your sites BG-pattern is really distracting... Is the background really that bad? :(You wanna make a background? :) Hmmmm.... Ok, fine, I will use script. It works! :D Thanks |
| ||
...And I would stay away from the Red and Blue pills too... meaning that my morning eyes don't like that pure and bright text colors! :) As for the BG, I'd use plain color... |
| ||
Ok, ok, I will ditch the BG, Hmmm... I will change it to... just all black. With less bright text. No, I'm too lazy to go back to every HTML page and change the colours. I made the BG even darker so you can hardly see it. |
| ||
Yes, that's better. Learn to use "Cascading Stylesheets", .CSS. this will let you define styles, fonts and backgrounds in a central File, so you onlf have to edit one file to change all. There are many tutorials, maybe try this: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp @mustang - erm - java isn't javascript. And please don't use msie with script, this is digital suicide. Just remember "Psyme" Script Trojan that simply installes an Exe on the users machine...And M$ still don't offers a patch afaik. |
| ||
@mustang - erm - java isn't javascript. You're right, of course... sorry! And please don't use msie with script, this is digital suicide. Just remember "Psyme" Script Trojan that simply installes an Exe on the users machine...And M$ still don't offers a patch afaik. Like there would a real choice for MSIE... :) |
| ||
I use opera for almost everything, and I heared mozilla firebird is pretty good too. Especially from a viewpoint of security. |
| ||
Sooooo.... the e-mail code is bad and I sould not have it on my site? |
| ||
no, it's not really bad. It's just the way that some people who have disabled Script n their Browsers (eg. me) wouldn't see anything at all. Maybe the following would be better:<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript"> <!-- username="paulleduc" at="@" domainname="shaw.ca" document.write("<A HREF='mailto:"+username+""+at+""+domainname+"'>"+username+""+at+""+domainname+"</a>") //--> </script> <noscript>My Email: paulleduc at shaw.ca</noscript> |
| ||
Yeah, I guess that would be better, I put that code on. |
| ||
How do I make it so I can search for my site on google? |
| ||
First you need to set your Meta Tags correctly, because most search engine would refuse to accept your submission, if the Meta Tags are not correct. Here is an example (of course, replace the content with your informations): <head> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO8859_1" /> <title>Download.com - Free downloads, shareware, and more.</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> <meta name="author" content="download.com"> <meta name="copyright" content="Copyright (c) 1995-2002 by CNET Networks, Inc."> <meta name="keywords" content="... download, utilities, windows, mac, internet, macintosh, software, application, applications, app, downloadable, dl, shareware, freeware, demo, osx, linux, xp, windows, 95, 98, 2000, win, winfiles, file, files, downloads, zip, downloader, exe ..."> <meta name="description" content=" ... Find the software you're looking for at Download.com, the most comprehensive source for free-to-try software downloads on the Web. Includes audio programs, utilities, Internet and desktop software, applications for developers, downloads for small business users, and more. ..."> <meta name="distribution" content="world"> <meta name="revisit-after" content="1"> </head> Then goto one of the various Multiple Site Submission Services and feed it with your page URL (http://members. shaw.ca/paulleduc). Maybe here: http://submit.freeurl.com/ Note: The search engines have lately started to request for the submitters email adress, probably due to massive anonymous abuse of their services. I don't know if you will get a lot of email spam after sendeing them your email adress... Maybe try it with an adress you don't use oftenly (or register one at yahoo.com) PS: you should not submit your URL more than one time, some engines will remove your entry in that case. Good luck! |
| ||
submit.freeurl.com/ says: Could not connect to URL http://members.shaw.ca/paulleduc (EDIT:)OOOOHhhhhhh The URL thing has changed to target=>blank something like that. Did I forget something there? if it matters here is the code: <html> <head> <title>Pauls Place</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO8859_1" /> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> <meta name="author" content="members.shaw.ca/paulleduc"> <meta name="copyright" content="Copyright (c) 2003 by Paul Leduc Networks, Inc."> <meta name="keywords" content="... download, games, place, paul, leduc, free, software, application, applications, app, downloadable, dl, shareware, freeware, demo, mesh, meshes, download, downloads, fun, funny, cool, pauls place, winfiles, file, files, stuff, zip, downloader, exe ..."> <meta name="description" content=" ... Pauls Place has lots of cool stuff to look at and\or download! There are games and 3D meshes and more! ..."> <meta name="distribution" content="world"> <meta name="revisit-after" content="1"> </head> Is anything wrong? |
| ||
<meta name="author" content="members.shaw.ca/paulleduc"> maybehere you should use an emailadress, maybe not like I mentioned an alias adress which is not so vital for you. BTW Your keywords are too general, don't expect to be found because there are millions of freeware sites and hundreds of paul leducs. I miss the words "Blitz", "Blitz3D", "Programming" "Blitzbasic" and so on, things which actually are on your webspace and which are more individualistic. I promise a search for "paul leduc blitzbasic" will be successful, top ranking. |

I made my site a little better by: changing the font size, making a page navigation thing at the top and changed the colours. I am also learning how to use those style sheets. :) But I am still having trouble with putting my site searchable on google. Here is my slightly updated code: <html> <head> <title>Pauls Place</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO8859_1" /> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> <meta name="author" content=\"p0ser_5@...; <meta name="copyright" content="Copyright (c) 2003 by Paul Leduc."> <meta name="keywords" content="Paul's Place, BlitzBasic, pauls place, Blitz3D, Blitz, games, programming, meshes"> <meta name="description" content=" ... Pauls Place has lots of cool stuff to look at and\or download! There are games and 3D meshes and more! ..."> <meta name="distribution" content="world"> <meta name="revisit-after" content="1"> <link rel="styleSheet" href="paul.css" type="text/css"> </head> Not that having the site on google is all that important, it would still be nice though. And another question: how do you create mouse-over effects or how do you make it so that the little tanned box appears with info in it? |
