Evening all, started working on the proper tracks for my rally / rallycross game, going for a slightly more realistic look. These will be rallycross-style closed circuits, allowing a bit more room to drift the car than the rally tracks from the demo. Currently this piece is just a single corner, but I wanted to establish a style and get my textures sorted first - the rest of the track should hopefully follow more quickly. ![]() ![]() |
| ||
Looks nice enough. Rallycross is usually done off-road though, isn't it? |
| ||
Looking great! Very realistic ... but maybe a little too green and gray... |
| ||
yeah a bit more colour would help. put some sheep in the fields or some roadsigns . |
| ||
Nice one "Carol". Ignore "Ruz" - he likes sheep. You don't want sheep - you want rabbits. The occasional one larging it's way across the road would be good. All-in-all, the graphics look nice - email me the source and media and I'll give you a better appraisal. |
| ||
Rallycross is usually done off-road though, isn't it? nope, it's a mixture of gravel/mud and tarmac. As for colour, it could be the evening lighting making it look a bit green/grey - here's a daytime shot - ![]() |
| ||
Looks okay to me. |
| ||
looking good |
| ||
I think it looks very good!! :D |
| ||
I want to drive on that. Put that track in your demo right now so i can play! ;) Nice work. Gnu |
| ||
Ah ... yeah that looks better! |
| ||
Grey and green is ok. Nobody complained about The Matrix being too green, and more than half the movie is tinted in green. btw that looks fantastic. |
| ||
Looks very nice. Although how much more system intensive is it going to be? |
| ||
Looks nice. Here's a version with a bit more brightness and a little more saturation: ![]() |
| ||
sswifty's shot looks more game orientated, your daytime shot looks like its about to rain. |
| ||
A nice blue sky in the background with some puffy clouds would also work wonders. And if you're feeling particularly adventuresome, you could add a bloom filter to make the brightest parts of the image glow slightly to give it that console game "whoah it's so bright it hurts my eyes!" look. (But you might want to let people turn that off if you add something like that since it'll require a pretty good 3D card to run fast.) |

Yeah, the clouds really make a difference. |
| ||
Vorderman, Althought the first shots are a bit green, I love the mood/atmosphere they create. With Sswifts colour correction and clouds that bottom shot could almost be a narrow section of somewhere like Oulton Park. Vorderman - I think this looks fantastic because a few tweaks and it will be very realistic. Excellent work dude! IPete2. |
| ||
I prefer vorderman's shots, they look realistic. Looks as if it is just coming to dusk. |
| ||
What he said ^ |
| ||
They all look good to me! Nice job! Now, the important question. About that rabbit.....can I smack into him with my vehicle? ;) |
| ||
I want cows... otherwise it's looking really nice! |
| ||
how about a sheep riding on the back of a cow with a saddle. looks nice BTW |
| ||
I was thinking about what makes a good race track.. Some tracks become 'samey' to look at and therefore quickly become dull and boring. Take Colin McRaes World Rally ... Most of the tracks in that game are non-memorable for me. The bits I did like were the very sharp bends which required some planning and timing to negotiate. I also love flying over high humped hills and heading into forest areas. Are you thinking along these lines? |
| ||
Sort of - they will be short rallycross tracks, although a bit more wooded than the typical rallycross track. They'll be a mixture of tarmac, mud and gravel, normally about 50/50 tramac/mud on each, probably with hills and banking but I'm not sure about jumps. I've done a bit of experimenting with a cloudy skybox, and have now set 5 times of day for the races - Sunrise - ![]() Morning - ![]() Afternoon - ![]() Dusk - ![]() Night - ![]() sswift's picture is nice, but I prefer the slightly less contrasty look I have at the moment - need to finish this test track and try placing a car on it next, to see if it all hangs together. |
| ||
Are we going to see headlights? Please, please I wanna see headlights shining on thos last two track settings - that would be WOW! IPete2. |
| ||
I actually like vorderman's shots better. The ones that sswift has come up with, though brighter, seem to make the graphics look less nice... The more cheerful sky definietly does help though. It looks great so far :) I hope it runs as well as it looks! |
| ||
SSwift it's the Shadows. If the light were that bright you would see sharper shadows. The shadows are also kind of long as if it were winter but since there is green grass then I would think it would be a hazy late afternoon shot. |
| ||
I hope it runs as well as it looks! me too! headlights? Hmm, I suppose so, in some form - using real lights for headlights tends to highlight the polygon edges a bit too much, and as the light moves you can clearly see the shading flowing across the polygon, which looks crap unless you have very small polygons. I might fake the headlights though! Here's a quick test - ![]() |
| ||
i wouldnt put "particles" on the headlights, it looks cheap, try something diff OR just change the particle texture to a really soft blurred one |
| ||
"SSwift it's the Shadows. If the light were that bright you would see sharper shadows. The shadows are also kind of long as if it were winter but since there is green grass then I would think it would be a hazy late afternoon shot." You may be right, but I was working with what I had available, and I may have overadjusted it. It's difficult to get it right. And I have an aversion to images which have an obvious and unrealistic color cast to them. For example, those color filters that photographers stick over their camera to make the sky darker or orange? Hate em! Think it looks really fake and ugly. Saw that in a commercial recently... They could get a much better effect with some post processing instead. As for Voderman's new pics... The only one I really don't like is tha afternoon one. Too greenish. Needs some red so it looks more yellow than green. Of course, that is just looking at the pics here. You really need to be looking at them in a game in motion to be able to tell for sure if something looks right. Only there will your eyes adjust to the color to fool you into thinking the tint is real. |
| ||
This is really good work, man. The graphics are top-notch and the environments as far as we've seen are fantastic. Can anyone say "Gran Tourismo Blitz"? |
| ||
LOL maybe |
| ||
i wouldnt put "particles" on the headlights, it looks cheap, try something diff OR just change the particle texture to a really soft blurred one Hmm, how about this - ![]() |
| ||
er wrong way:P u made it more "starish" hehe :) depends on the look your going for i spose, |
| ||
I like 'em! |
| ||
looking good so far. My only comments would be I'd like to see a bit more definition in the shadow maps (sharper details) I also think the road texture is too consistant across the width. You could make a >slightly< darker band where cars have driven, and also add in a "racing groove" where rubber has been put down in the corners. Just my .02 |
| ||
Look at Gran Turismo - that uses a lighting effect as you've done above - only difference is, the flare is only visible when the car and camera are pointing at each other, and fades gradually as the car/camera turns away. |
| ||
nice, basicly needs some experimentation with the lighting, more ambient light generaly and in the shadow reas so it's not SO dark a little shadow detail at the edges as mentioned above. Looks good though |
| ||
Vorderman, I was going to say what GfK said, make sure the light flares fade gradually as you turn towards viewing the vehicle from behind. |
| ||
The headlights look great :) Definietly need them. Controllable, please? It's fun to blink headlights all over the place if your playing a game in multiplayer. Oooh, and I didn't realize that that's the first glimpse of what your cars look like too. The roads should maybe a be a bit darker though... Maybe only in some spots... |
| ||
WOW! Lovely! IPete2. |
| ||
Thanks guys. Mr. Picklesworth : no, that's not one of my cars, it's a Lancer borrowed from an NFS mod. I did have a picture of a Lancia 037 rallycar that I was making when this was a pure rally game, but I shall need to make some rallycross style cars instead, which means original Minis up to the Ford Focus and a few group B cars like the RS200 and Metro 6r4. I think I might go for slightly stylised versions of them though. As for the roads being darker in places, I am going to add tyre mark overlays to show the racing line, or possibly put them in as a part of the lightmap, I just haven't got around to it yet. |
| ||
RS2000. woah. yeah. loverly work here mate! |
| ||
no no no - RS200 - you know, the group B rallycar, not RS2000 (which was a model of Escort I believe). That said, Escorts where terrific rallycars, hmmm, perhaps I could have them as well.... |
| ||
LOL, I Meant RS200. get the headlights working ;) |
| ||
cant wait to see a demo :) great screenshots! |
| ||
love the headlights in your last shot. infact the whole thing looks superb :D |
| ||
I prefer vorderman's shots, they look realistic. Agreed. |
| ||
Those shots looks cool to me Vordeman. How are you doing those fake headlights? Will they work across the lightmaps? |
| ||
Well Im really impressed! It looks almost photographic! Excellent attention to detail! Good luck with the car lights. oh and... no cows, sheep, rabbits OR mongooses... Or Turnips in fact. Just good ol' fashioned hedgehogs that may amble across the road. |
| ||
Heh I've been sitting here waiting for an update :( Malice, you should link to where your sig was posted you know. ;) Theres alot of dollop on these here forums. Hard to find the funny stuff! Vorderman, Any news? |
| ||
not much recently - still building the first rallycross track, and experimenting with trees to find out what works. |
| ||
Malice, you should link to where your sig was posted you know. ;) Theres alot of dollop on these here forums. Hard to find the funny stuff! Sure - I'll do that now! Thing is, I get the obscure quotes out of wherever I find them, even if the original thread/post isn't intentionally funny. It's amaznig what people come out with!!! |
| ||
Heh.. yup. I noticed myself on there and my other half started laughing. Took me a while to find it funny :P Vorderman,Excelent. Keep us informed! |
| ||
Very nice work. Could I ask what you used to create the trees? Regards, Rogue Vector |
| ||
I found that tree graphic laying around on my hd - I've no idea where it came from. It'll have to be replaced at some point, but for the time being it looks nice enough. |
