Hi Guys,

Do you remember the good old days when boy met girl in a giant ant infested city in the desert? If so then you may be interested in my little remake of the Sandy White classic Ant Attack. Its available at my website under the games section...

Here are a couple of screenies as well...

Cheers,

Really nice and pollished game.

TartanTangerine (was Indiepath)(Posted 2006) [#3]
Wow, this is just too cool.

boomboom(Posted 2006) [#4]
Are you using spritecandy for the interface? if so, how do you find it?

Uncle(Posted 2006) [#5]
Thanks guys.

Boomboom - Yep I used sprite candy. I have to say I found it quite easy and took a lot of effort out of making the gui. I looked at others including nsprite which is very good too, but my personal preference came to Sprite Candy.

Grey Alien(Posted 2006) [#6]
This looks great! The original was way hard though (as I remember it).

A refreshing change from all those 2d puzzlers !It's great to see that there is still 3d development happening in Blitz - nice remake of a classic.

jhocking(Posted 2006) [#8]
The screenshots look really cool (I love the stylized look!) but the game doesn't work for me. There's a loading screen, and then a logo, and then it just goes black.

I'm developing 3D games. Don't I count? :(

Joe, you're the first for it not to work... if you have time can you email me your graphics card spec and I will see what i can do. Also you can edit the AA.INI and change the screen resolution. It shouldn't really fix it, but you never know.

sswift(Posted 2006) [#10]
I like the second screenshot the best.

jhocking(Posted 2006) [#11]
@sswift: Me too.

@uncle: I didn't have much time this morning to check on what's wrong, so I'll check it out more tonight. I doubt my graphics card has anything to do with it; it's a GeForce 6600. Although this doesn't make much sense off the top of my head, it's possible that Maya was interfering (I had Maya running at the same time.)

sswift(Posted 2006) [#12]
What do you do in that game anyway? It seems like you can shoot the ants, and maybe jump up onto the blocks, but what's the scan thing for?

SillyPutty(Posted 2006) [#13]
maybe download it and try it ? :)

The idea is to rescue the people who are trapped in the city. You use the scanner to locate the people. It is green when you are heading towards them. Once you have found them you have to lead then back out of the city. Thems the rules... For an insight on the original game check out http://www.sandywhite.co.uk/fun/ants/default.htm

Sorry Joe - Flame Wars is very cool ! You are very lucky to have a "built-in 3d" artist to work with too - or should that be 3d Artist with a "built-in" programmer ;)

Why don't I have shadows on ants and chars? = Ati card

Sorry but there are no shadows regardless of the graphics card. I tried incorporating Swifts excellent shadow library but for some unknow reason is screwed up the Ant AI. Im thinking about trying to add the Norc shadow routine, and perhaps I will have a serious look at it this weekend.

jhocking(Posted 2006) [#18]
sswift's shadow system is screwing with your AI? That is... very odd.

sswift(Posted 2006) [#19]
The only way that could happen would be if he used some of the same variable names as the shadow system.

For sure this is no slight on your system shaun, as it works like a dream on other projects I am working on. Its just one of those things. To be honest I tried fixing it for a couple of hours then get tied down doing something else so decided to leave it out. Like I say I wasnt knocking you system.

@grisu, i little off the subject but IMHO I think your new logo would look better if you fliped it. I dont know why. Its great looking but I think you need to flip it.

Grisu(Posted 2006) [#22]
Shadows would rock on that game and you would keep the retro style!!!

@n8r2k:
I know... it's just that it takes too much height this way.

n8r2k(Posted 2006) [#23]
no i mean like this:

of course, thats just my opinion

Blitzplotter(Posted 2006) [#24]
Cool remake of ants3d.... well done... a very accomplished attempt at producing an up to date version of Sandy Whites game.

Uncle(Posted 2006) [#25]

Ok Ive managed to get some fake shadows working now. I will just have to implement the options in the menu now. Should be a new version sometime this weekend.

@ Blitzplotter... cheers

Look what "ENAY" emailed me:

what?

...

You are a weird guy, you know that?

puki(Posted 2006) [#28]
Personally, I find it disgusting and I have removed it.

Sledge(Posted 2006) [#29]
My copy must be broken.

Uncle(Posted 2006) [#30]
New version is now available with shadows. I tried various methods but finally opted for the simple version. If you don't like them you can turn them off using the F3 and F4 button.

Uncle, why do I have "full" shadows when watching the screnery in the menu background and not in game? Blobs are fine but not that great.

In the menu they are simply mirror reflecting the above ants, they are not real shadows. They only appear that way because all the colour is washed out. Real shadows would slow the whole game down, so Ive opted for the blobs. I would be interested if you know of a faster method.

Very nice remake, Uncle!

Didn't the grenades in the original just roll along the ground? I think I prefered that, TBH. As it is, the ants move so fast in relation to grenades, that they seem to easily be able to avoid them.

BTW, someone else did an Ant Attack 3D remake in Blitz3D. Have you seen it?

n8r2k(Posted 2006) [#34]
it was ModestyBCatt

big10p(Posted 2006) [#35]
Yeah, that's the one. I wonder if she ever finished it?! Probably not as she seemed to come and go from here pretty quickly. I seem to remember she had a baby to look after though, so I'll let her off this time. :P

Rob Farley(Posted 2006) [#36]
Not a bad remake... The grenades are too slow though, and they do some strange changing direction thing... as if they're connected to the player or something.

A jump animation would have been nice too.

You can play this on-line now at http://www.cloverleafgames.com/webbed.php

Thanks to Andrew for his kind permission to use the game.

Grisu(Posted 2006) [#38]
@Tim:
Does your loader work under mac or linux as well?

n8r2k(Posted 2006) [#39]
grisu i still think you should mirror your mutant gene. Its bugging me. :)

Genexi2(Posted 2006) [#40]
Quite a nice remake, plays very well on my system, only thing that bothered me was the behind the back view, made me nauseated until I changed it to the iso-view, which worked much better for my eyes.
(games with lots of perfect corners runnin smooth do that to me, like Wolfenstein3d or any of the simpler looking pseudo-3d games back in the days)
