ok, of late, possibly the last week my PC has been randomly crashing, it locks up screen freezes then BOOM!, reset required.

Its horrible because I am really struggling to identify the issue, its not temps, not a virus that I can tell, done a defrag and disk scan, and the graphics cards seems fine as well.

I just tried to get a java update and it failed, I had to turn off avast for a few minutes, so was wondering if a fight between java and avast might have been causing me problems.

has anyone else had any issues updating java in the last few days and do you use avast ?

Test your memory with memtest, try with a single stick, swap round etc.

Do you have crash dumps enabled?

I use AVG but have had no probs with Java or crashing.

will check memtest out in a little while im taking some extra preemptive steps and sending all my work over to another computer on my lan just in case this machine goes bomb and fails to start :/

little update in case this helps anyone else in the future.

I switched to Firefox, stopped my AV updated Java as my AV (Avast) had an issue with the java update installer, and more than 24 hours went past without a hitch, no restarts no shut downs no crashes.

So the issue was I am 99% sure something caused by Chrome, trying to access something in java, or java trying to update itself and avast calling foul with the binary.

I am now back on Chrome and if I can make it 24 hours without another crash then i recon the whole thing was java being an ass and having a spat with my virus software.

lets hope so at least :)
